Do you know why there is a moat at the Rectorate of the University of Seville?

In the early 18th century it was decided to build a factory that would monopolize the tobacco trade. The old Royal Tobacco Factory, where the Rectorate of the University of Seville is currently located, was surrounded by a moat that answered the need of having only one entrance and exit, in order to avoid smuggling and also to control factory workers.
